Jerry's Seafood

COM - Jerry's Seafood (Sept 2017)

My Aunt Peggy and Uncle Jerry founded Jerry’s Seafood in 1983. They were the operating partners of the business until 2003. I grew up working here along with several other family members. I’ve done every job from the front of the house to the back of the house. I wasn’t a great student and decided after high school to forgo college and went to work at the restaurant full time. I started managing in 1994 with responsibilities of scheduling the staff, ordering, and helping to manage the daily operation. In 2003 my friend Jason Lee who also was a long-time employee and manager of the business had the opportunity to purchase the business from my Uncle. We grew the business and opened another location in Annapolis that didn’t quite meet the expectation and we closed it down. In 2008 we expanded our business to Bowie MD. In 2015, we had to make the difficult decision to shut down our original location in Lanham MD. We didn’t own this property and although we had a good relationship with our landlord, we found that the building needed a lot of work that the landlord was not willing to invest in updating the building. We were very fortunate that same year we were able to purchase our property in Bowie. Although, shutting down the original location in Lanham was hard we knew it made good business sense to consolidate the two business’ which were only 10 miles apart. Now we have a business that can seat up to 270 guests and offer private dining, full service catering, and offer fresh not frozen overnight shipping across the country. Today Jerry’s Seafood still has family working the business and those who are not blood relatives feel like family. We have very little turn over. My business partner Jason and I are still in the store daily working side by side with 4 of my nephews and 1 of Jason’s helping to run the operation. Our loyal customer base is incredible. Many of these customers we remember when they were children coming in with their families. Not often does a night goes by that someone does not share a memory or story with one of our staff about Jerry’s Seafood and the impact on their family. We are extremely proud of this and always want our customers to know how much we value them. We have no plans of growing business the horizon for now, but doesn’t mean that if the right opportunity came along we wouldn’t give it a go.
